BISD to decide what seats will be up for election in November

Monday's agenda for a special meeting of the Beaumont Independent School District Board of  trustees is an item calling for al vote on whether to have three trustees or all seven trustees up for election in November.

Trustees will also will vote on an item calling for Attorney Melody Chappell to take final steps to cancel the original election scheduled for May.

Trustees may also decide to accept guidelines for the creation of a back up seven single district re-districting plan. Just last Tuesday a three judge panel in Washington DC ruled that BISD would not have an election in May.

Texas election code states all seven trustees should have been up for re-election in May because of redistricting, The one exception would be if the board voted on a resolution allowing trustees with time remaining on their terms to serve them to the end.

The Ninth Court of Appeals ruled all seven seats were up for election.  The Department of Justice later deemed the Ninth Court of Appeals ruling unfair to voters and trustees. Now trustee elections are rescheduled for November giving BISD a chance to follow Texas law.

If the board votes for three trustees to be up for re-election, those will be Janice Brassard, Gwen Ambres and Tom Neild.

Brassard's seat is the only contested race, she will run against Joey Hilliard.
