BISD layoffs have started

The layoffs at the Beaumont Independent School District have started.

Several teachers told 12News that Thursday night they began getting calls from their principals telling them they are on the official reduction in force list.  The list will officially come out 5 p.m. Friday.

The BISD board of trustees will vote on the specific job cuts Monday.  Those laid off will actually be under proposed termination, which means they can appeal.

But 12News has learned that teachers are in talks with lawyers about possibly filing for a motion for a blanket temporary restraining order that would stop the district from letting the teachers go.

One school employee, Ron Reynolds, has already been granted a TRO, and has been taken off the proposed list.

A hearing on his status is scheduled for June 30.

One of the teachers who called Thursday about her imminent termination is Gina Martin.  She is the theater arts teacher at Ozen.  She received a lot of publicity after her students rallied to save her job and protect fine arts programs from being cut.

The board agreed not to let go of any teacher if it jeopardized the program, even though some fine arts teachers might have to go from campus to campus to teach.

Martin said her principal called her, apparently reading from a prepared script, and told her the reduction in force list with names was coming out Friday at 5 p.m. and that Martin had until noon Friday to resign if she chose to do so.

Here is the script that principals are reading over the phone to the teachers being laid off:

"I am calling to inform you that your name will be included on the list for proposed termination due to the Reduction In Force.
I want to assure you that the criteria were applied appropriately to your affected area by an outside consultant.

The agenda will be posted on Friday, June 27, 2014, at approximately 5:00 p.m.
The agenda must include a list of all contracted employees that are being proposed for termination.
The only way to avoid your name being placed on the list is for you to resign your position prior to 12:00 pm on Friday.  Please e-mail your resignation to myself and HR if you wish to resign.

The board meeting to propose terminations will take place on Monday, June 30, 2014, at 5:30 pm.  Once your name has been proposed for termination, you will have an opportunity to request a hearing in accordance with policy DFFA (LOCAL).

A letter will be available for you to pick up on Tuesday, July 1, 2014, between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm at the Central Administration Building.  This letter will contain information regarding the proposed termination including hearing details.  If you do not pick up your letter during the times listed above, the letter will be sent to you via certified mail that afternoon.

I will be glad to answer any questions you may have or seek an answer to any question that I am unable to answer."
