BEAUMONT - The Beaumont Independent School District had two main goals at their forum on redistricting to lay out the proposed plan and get community feedback.
Leading the forum on Thursday was redistricting attorney from Austin, David Mendez. "The school district and board of managers published a plan that divides the community into five areas." Said Mendez.
The BISD Board of Managers is required to adjust the boundaries of the Trustee Districts. Maps were shown to illustrate the redistricting plans.
Irmalyn Thomas attended the meeting and wanted to be assured her community will be fairly represented. "I'm just concerned about the redistricting trying to see that the African-American vote is not deluded." Said Thomas.
According to BISD, redistricting plans will be narrowly tailored to avoid discrimination against racial minorities and language minorities.
There will be two more public forums set for September 22nd and 27th.
