BISD faces possible legal action from teachers

Beaumont Independent School District teachers could announce legal action against the district as soon as Monday according to an Austin lawyer representing the educators.

Last week the district announced the layoff process of 300 district employees would start Monday. But sources in BISD say orders to begin the process were sent out Friday.

Teachers in fear of losing their jobs protested at Thursday's budget board meeting.  At that meeting Texas Education Agency Conservator Fred Shafer read a letter written by the state's Education Commissioner.

The Commissioner wrote trustees, saying staff reductions should come from areas farthest from the classroom.

The attorney for the teachers said he was looking to get a copy of the letter. Sunday he said obtained a recording of Shafer reading it to trustees. The attorney said Monday he will speak with the Association of Texas Professional Educators before a final decision is made on any legal recourse.
