Beaumont to use $46 million to improve roads

Beaumont drivers could soon be seeing smoother streets in the city.

Washington Boulevard, 7th street and Old Dowlen Road are all roadways the city of Beaumont is planning to improve.

The projects are now possible thanks to an FAA ruling that frees up $46 million in natural gas tax revenue that came from wells at the Beaumont Municipal Airport.

Councilman Jaime Smith says 7th street and Washington Boulevard will be the first to be revamped.

When work begins on those roads crews will completely tear up the asphalt, repave the roads and install sidewalks improving the roadways for pedestrians, drivers and their cars.

Councilman Smith says the reconstruction of 7th street is a $7 million project and should begin in June.

Roadwork on Washington Boulevard should begin in late summer - early fall and cost about $30 million.
