A Beaumont man was charged with murder Friday after a 17-year-old died from a gunshot would she received Thursday night.
24-year-old Charles Ray Harris was arrested just before 1 p.m. Friday at a relatives home on Cable Avenue in Beaumont. Police say a family member convinced Harris to surrender. Harris is accused of shooting 17-year-old Danielle Rodriguez in the head before shoving her out of his car Thursday night. 12 News spoke with Rodriguez' mother who said Harris then got out of the car and then "stomped" on his victim's head before fleeing the scene.
"I don't understand why he would do that to her," said Priscilla Rodriguez. "I don't even know why she was in the car."
"She touched so many hearts," added Rodriguez. "No matter what some was going through, she always put a smile on their face."
Rodriguez was a junior at Beaumont Central High. The shooting took place at the Pointe North Apartments in the 3700 block of Magnolia around 8:30 p.m.
According to 12 News file stories, police arrested Harris in connection with a January 2010 shooting incident in which Earnest Hadnot, 17, of Beaumont was killed and another man, David Morris of Beaumont was wounded. Hadnot has been charged with the aggravated assault of Morris, but the shooting death of Mr. Hadnot remains under investigation. Police are awaiting ballistics tests and other evidence before presenting the homicide case to the District Attorney's office.
12 News spoke with Jefferson County District Attorney Tom Maness who said Thursday's shooting happened while Hadnot was out on a $50,000 bond for the aggravated assault of David Morris and a $20,000 bond for a previous aggravated assault charge.
Rodriguez's family has set up an account to help raise money for funeral arrangements.
