Beaumont will be featuredon the Discovery Channel for receiving the title of Best Year Round Destinationin Texas for the second year in a row.
OfficalBestOf.com, a travel website that offers help forthose planning a vacation, ranked the citybased on its events, attractions and history.
Beaumont business owner James Perrio said he was surprised bythe new found title.
"I didn't expectpeople to look at this area," he said. "I think of it as more of an industrial town not adestination."
However, other locals like Katharine Carmichael felt honored by the recognition.
"I thinkit's great," she said. "I think it's about time people found out all the special things wehave here, it's a small town but we have a lot of great people."
According to the Beaumont Convention and Visitors Bureau, local tax receipts for 2012 were up 10.4 percentfrom the previous year, indicating more people were visiting and staying in Beaumont.
Stephanie Molina with the Beaumont CVB said it's definitely something to be proud of.
"Theywere just very impressed with the dynamic resurgence of culture, music and allthe opportunities to get out and explore," Molina said. "Its kind of a lesser known destination,but we had a lot to offer here in Beaumont."
One focus of the Beaumont CVB is to draw more eco-tourism to the area, so they're focusing on more nature attractions like Cattail Marsh, where birdwatchers can see over 250 species of birds.
Whether you're a"Beauliever" or not, most Southeast Texans agree, it's a step in the right direction for getting Beaumont on the map.
The Discovery Channel program will air Monday Mar. 24 at 4 a.m., 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. It will also be featured on OfficialBestOf.com.
