Beaumont ISD superintendent recommends eliminating 300 jobs to save district $25 million

The Beaumont Independent School District Superintendent late Friday afternoon issued a letter announcing the elimination of around 75 at-will positions and 225 contract positions within the district.

The letter from Superintendent Timothy Chargois addressed to all staff as well as the community said the move is needed as part of an effort to reduce the district's budget by $25 million.

The superintendent said cutting the number of employees is needed to reduce the budget, and noted that over 80 percent of the district's operating expenses are personnel costs.

Employees affected by the reduction in force will be notified by June 12.

The BISD Board of Education Consultation Committee is set to meet Tue. May 27 at 5 p.m. in the Superintendent's Office at the Administration Building to discuss salaries and benefits, employee benefits and salaries and benefits as they relate to student performance.

The agenda for Tuesday's meeting says, "No action, decision or vote will be taken."
