A 2-year-old is at Texas Children's Hospital in critical condition and a Beaumont man is in jail charged with injury to a child.
A Beaumont Police Department spokesperson told 12News that officers were called to the emergency room of Baptist Hospital in Beaumont Sunday where doctors said that a toddler's injuries did not appear to have occurred naturally. The attending physician told police the child's injury was consistent with trauma to the head.
The 2-year-old was in critical condition and was taken by air ambulance to Texas Children's Hospital. The mother was allowed to go to Houston to be with her child.
During the initial investigation, officers determined the boyfriend of the child's mother, identified as Vaughn Days, 22, of Beaumont, had been taking care of the child when the injuries occurred.
Days was taken to the police station to speak to police detectives and investigators with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. During the questioning, Days admitted to, and described the actions that lead to the child's injuries.
Days was arrested and booked in Jefferson County Jail for Injury to a Child which is a first degree felony.
Department of Family and Protective Services spokesperson Shari Pulliam told 12News the incident is under investigation as a case of shaken baby syndrome.
There were no other children in the home and Pulliam said they have no prior cases at the house.
A jail spokesperson late Monday told 12News Days had not yet been arraigned and bond has not yet been set. It is expected that this will take place Tuesday morning.
