Baseball drops game to Nicholls

Cards will play Saturday doubleheader

BEAUMONT – It was another strong outing on the mound for Will Hibbs, but unfortunately he saw his efforts go for naught as the Lamar baseball team fell 4-0 to conference foe Nicholls at Vincent-Beck Stadium on Friday night.

Hibbs, a sophomore out of Friendswood, tossed seven innings and struck out four, giving up three runs (one unearned). It marked a second consecutive quality start for the 6-foot-7 right-hander as he tossed eight-plus and gave up a pair of earned runs last week at Southeastern Louisiana.

Offensively, Kyle Markum led the way for the Cardinals, going 2-for-3 at the plate, but ultimately LU was out-hit in the game 10-7.

Nicholls (11-12, 3-1 Southland) scored the opening run with a bit of luck. Charles Morton led off the second with a walk, and a Tyler Duplantis groundball to second in the ensuing at-bat turned into a single as the umpire attempted to avoid the ball. A Brandon Jackson one-out single loaded the bases, and David Zorn cashed in a run with a sacrifice fly to left.

Back-to-back Colonel doubles in the third gave the visitors from Thibodaux, La., a 2-0 lead.

A fielding error came back to haunt the Cards (14-9, 1-3 Southland) in the seventh as Philip Lyons ultimately scored after reaching on a Tyler Sullivan mistake.

Nicholls would score once more off of reliever Hunter Perry in the eighth, and then Zach Aitken took to the mound in the ninth and set them down in order.

The Cards and Colonels will close out the series on Saturday with a doubleheader at Vincent-Beck Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
