Auto burglary suspects try to run over witness, police say

A Beaumont Police Department spokesperson said two men are in jail after they went on an auto-burglary spree Sunday and tried to run over a woman who witnessed one of their crimes.

Around 5:30 p.m. Sunday officers were called to the Amelia Little League Ball Park located in 500 block of Eldridge Drive in Beaumont's west end. A woman told police she caught someone in the act of burglarizing her vehicle. She said she confronted two men in a black GMC SUV with Tennessee license plates. The driver tried to run over her while fleeing the scene.

According to a Beaumont Police Department news release, the men had broken in to three vehicles.

About twenty minutes later a patrol officer was checking the Hike and bike trail along Phelan Blvd when he noticed a black GMC Yukon backed in next to a 2008 grey Honda Accord at 9452 Phelan Blvd. The officer walked toward the GMC where he said he saw a man breaking in to the Honda. The suspect saw the officer and jumped in to the passenger seat of the GMC. Additional officers arrived to assist and both suspects were arrested.

Officers found marijuana along with property taken from an auto burglary on Eldridge in the suspect vehicle.

The men, identified as Claude Marcell Eugene, 27, and Marvin Belotte Deuise, 33, both of Florida, were arrested on four counts of Burglary of a Vehicle, Possession of Marijuana and Aggravated Assault with a Motor Vehicle. Both had previous warrants.

Eugene and Beuise are held at the Jefferson County Jail.
