Gavin McCline began a brand new school year Monday at Blanchette Elementary in Beaumont. For many children, the first day of school is about adjusting to new classes, new teachers, and even new classmates.
Over the last year, Gavin has been adjusting to his father's absence. That's because Army Sergeant First Class Gary McCline had been stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. On Tuesday, he came home, much to the surprise of his son.
"This is the best day ever!" exclaimed Gavin as he hugged his father.
Gary was speechless, he just couldn't believe he had been reunited with his family.
"Words can't explain it, it's been almost a year since I saw my family."
The time away was also hard on Gary's wife, Letecia, who explained how nervous she was on the drive to pick up Gary at the airport.
"My heart was pounding, it was like falling in love all over again."
Gary said he didn't feel nervous until he saw his wife. At that moment, he realized the magnitude of his return. As for Gavin, he's just glad to have his dad back.
"He's a great dad, I'm proud to be his son"
