2-month-old baby in Winnie suffers 12 broken bones, father arrested

A disturbing case of child abuse has surfaced in Chambers County.

Department of Family and Protective Services spokesperson Gwen Carter says 2-month-old Carlee White of Winnie was admitted to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston April 30 with several injuries. Carter told 12News Saturday that the infant has been placed with a family member, but technically is still in the custody of DFPS.

According to a DFPS report obtained by 12News Friday, the department was notified April 29 of the child's injuries after the mother took her to a Beaumont hospital for a swollen shoulder.

A DFPS agent and law enforcement went to the family's apartment in Winnie that same day. According to the report, Carlee's father, 18-year-old Brandon White, told a Chambers County Sheriff's Deputy "I hurt the baby," and started crying. The document shows White admitted to grabbing the baby by the arm and pulling her across a bed. He was arrested and charged with felony injury to a child. His bond was set at $100,000. He bonded out Friday.

However, the report says the father's statement does not account for all of the child's injuries, which include:

     -10 broken ribs
     -Broken collarbone
     -Broken right arm
     -Bruised mouth

A source close to the family says Carlee was force-fed and gagged with a spoon so badly that she can't eat without crying. Carlee's mother, 19-year-old Briana White, is also being investigated. The report says a social worker told investigators there's no possible way the mother could not have known the child was being abused. Briana White had no comment when we found her outside of her Winnie apartment Friday.

Carter says DFPS has taken custody of Carlee, and that Carlee was scheduled to be released from Texas Children's Hospital Friday.
A hearing has been scheduled for May 9.
