BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- A brave woman in east Birmingham took a page out of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali's book Friday evening, using her own form of the "rope-a-dope" to foil a man's robbery attempt at her home in South East Lake Friday evening.
According to Lt. Sean Edwards, the incident happened shortly after 6 p.m. in the 7800 block of 6th Avenue South. A man knocked on the woman's door and asked her if she had a pickup truck for sale. When the man was told that there wasn't a truck for he sale he pretended to leave the house only to return moments later, forcing his way into the woman's home, demanding money.
The woman pretended to adhere to the intruder's demands by going to get her debit card from her purse, but, unbeknownst to the suspect, that wasn't the only thing she was going to retrieve. The woman pulled out her card as well as a gun and shot the man in the hand. The wounded suspect managed to flee the scene before police could arrive, and he has yet to be captured.
Authorities continue to search for the man and are checking local hospitals where he may have been seeking treatment for his gunshot wound.
