Lamar's Weisbrod named pre-season ALL-SLC

Lamar University senior forward Colton Weisbrod has been named 2017 Preseason First-Team All-Southland Conference announced the league office Tuesday afternoon. The announcement comes just a week before the league head coaches travel to Houston for the Southland Conference Basketball Media Day at the Toyota Center.

BEAUMONT, Texas –Lamar University senior forward Colton Weisbrod has been named 2017 Preseason First-Team All-Southland Conference announced the league office Tuesday afternoon. The announcement comes just a week before the league head coaches travel to Houston for the Southland Conference Basketball Media Day at the Toyota Center.

“Obviously, I’m real happy for the all the accolades that have come Colton’s way,” said LU head coach Tic Price. “He has been a very good leader for us, and works hard every day to improve himself on the court. Everyone wants to have a special senior season and go out on top, and we’re going to do everything to make sure that happens for him.”

Weisbrod garnered first-team All-Southland honors following a junior campaign that saw him rank among the league leaders in points, rebounds and field goal percentage. Weisbrod ranked seventh in the league scoring averaging 15.1 points per game, while finishing third with 8.1 rebounds per contest. He enters the 2017-18 season as the Southland’s top returning rebounder.

Weisbrod guided the Cardinals to their best season since 2012 by qualifying for the Southland Conference Championship tournament. Big Red’s 19-win season was strong enough to receive a bid from CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT) selection committee – the program’s first postseason bid since making a run to the 2012 NCAA Championships.

Weisbrod started every game for the Cardinals in the 2016-17 leading the team in scoring 16 times and rebounds 20 times. He garnered SLC Player of the Week honors in December following a three-game stretch that saw him average 27 points and better than 11 rebounds.

Weisbrod proved himself as a double-double machine during his first season with the Cardinals. He finished tied for third in the league with 10 double-doubles just one off the overall lead. Weisbrod scored in double-figures in his first seven games, and 26 times overall last season. He also grabbed double-figure rebounds 10 times including a career-high 17 at Idaho State.

“The thing that most people don’t understand about Colton is that he doesn’t really care about the individual recognition,” said Price. “He is focused on team success, so it is nice to see him receive that type respect from the league head coaches and media relations directors. Colton also understands that preseason recognition doesn’t guarantee any success because you still have to go out every day and earn that respect in practice and on gameday.

Weisbrod's scored at least 20 points in a game eight times with two 30-point efforts. He scored a career-high 34 points against Southeastern Louisiana, and closed out the regular season with a 32-point showing against rival McNeese.

The Red and White kick off the season Friday, Nov. 10, at Tulsa, before hosting Coastal Carolina four nights later in the home opener. Fans can get an early look at the 2017-18 Cardinals Tuesday, Oct. 24, when they compete in the annual Red vs. White scrimmage. The scrimmage will tip off at 7 p.m. from the Montagne Center.
