The suspected gunman, identified as 32-year-old Dabrett Black of Lindale, is accused of killing Texas DPS Trooper Damon Allen earlier in the evening.

Trooper Damon Allen (Corsicana PD)

Allen, who was with the department since 2002, was a husband and father of three children. He was shot and killed at about 4 p.m. on Interstate 45, just south of Fairfield in Freestone County. He was returning to a patrol vehicle when a suspect fired shots with a rifle.

Allen died at the scene, according to Texas DPS.

Black fled the scene and was later captured in Waller County, northwest of Houston. He was booked into the Brazos County Jail and charged with capital murder of a peace officer.

Black has a previous criminal history that includes evading arrest and violence toward law enforcement, authorities say.
