PORT ARTHUR — Due to hurricane Harvey, many high school students did not get the chance to experience going on college tours last fall.

The Port Arthur chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated hosted a college fair today at Memorial High School, but this wasn’t your traditional college fair.

"What we decided to do was invite all of the local students out to visit with various historically black colleges and universities,” event coordinator Tracie Young said.

Young, who is the event coordinator says students had the chance to interact with many different HBCU recruiters.

"We have many peolpe here today to discuss college entrance, and to discuss getting assistance with preparing for college,” Young said.

She says the experience you get from attending an HBCU is just one you can’t find anywhere else.

"It's just a different type of atmosphere that is very conducive to learning, it's kind of like having your home away from home," Young said.
