DENVER - Every 40 seconds someone in the United States has a stroke. Once a stroke happens 2 million brain cells die every minute it goes untreated. That’s why it's important to talk about and know the warning signs.

May is National Stroke Awareness Month.

The American Stroke Association uses the acronym F.A.S.T. as a way to remember the warning signs.

  • F’ace - drooping face is the first indicator
  • A’rm - weakness
  • S’lurred - speech
  • T’elephone-  if the person has all of those symptoms call for help.

Stroke is preventable, treatable and beatable.

Dr. Judd Jensen with Blue Sky Neurology and David Mueller -- who suffered from a stroke at a relatively young age -- joined the 9NEWS mornings show.

Mueller has an incredible story. Almost a year ago, at the age of 35, he suffered from a stroke.

“I knew that I was at risk, but I refused to believe it," Mueller said. "I thought I was young and invincible. I have changed so many things [since then]. My activity level, my diet, my weight but most important was changing my mindset. I have lost 50 pounds in the last year all in an effort to be healthy and live a long happy and healthy life with my family."

Mueller is perfect example that this can happen to anybody.
