Orange County family plans to rebuild decades-old business after Hurricane Laura demolished building

"It definitely hurt this part of Orange County."

ORANGE COUNTY, Texas — Throughout Orange County, there are several downed power lines, trees and destruction to businesses. It's forcing some to start over.

Potter's Mirror Glaze on Strickland Drive was completely demolished by Hurricane Laura. Now the Potter family is looking at 50 years of memories, now dented and destroyed. Laura was the fifth hurricane to impact the business.

"Really wasn't expecting this. When we saw everybody's and everybody else was saying it didn't hurt this and it didn't hurt that; it definitely hurt this part of Orange County," Wayne Potter said.

His father, Richard Potter, owns the business.

It's not hard to see the downed powerlines and scattered debris all over the tight knit town. The widespread damage is catching the attention of top leaders in Texas.

Gov. Greg Abbott visited the county on Thursday.

"When you consider the magnitude of the damage that could have occurred here, we did dodge a bullet," Abbott said.

He met with regional leaders and assessed the damage across Orange county.

"We've had trouble with the other hurricanes before but never this bad and it's not going away," Potter said. "We're gonna build back, we may not be as big but we're gonna build it back the best we can."

Many in Orange County are expected to be without power for a few days.
