Pickup truck strikes tanker car at Beaumont railyard

Firefighters used the jaws of life to extricate the driver before they were taken to the hospital.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Beaumont Police are investigating after a pickup truck struck a stopped train at a railyard off College Street Thursday morning.

Firefighters had to use the jaws of life to extricate the driver before he could be taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The wreck happened at the Union Pacific railroad yard off Sunnyside Drive about four blocks north of College Street just after 9 a.m. according to police.

Police say the Toyota Tundra pickup truck was speeding north along Sunnyside Drive before crossing the parking lot and several tracks and then striking the a stationary tank car.

It took firefighters nearly an hour to get the driver out of the truck before he could be taken by ambulance to the hospital with serious injuries according to police.

A resident who lives two blocks from the railyard told 12News that they heard a loud bang and then heard sirens after the wreck happened.
