TxDot contractor killed, another injured after being struck along U.S. 69 during multi-vehicle wreck

The Beaumont Police Department is reporting via its Facebook page that they are there working a "possible fatality."

BEAUMONT, Texas — One construction crew member was killed and another injured after they were struck during a multi-vehicle wreck along Southbound U.S. Highway 69 Tuesday morning.

The wreck happened in an active construction zone at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday according to a news release on Facebook from Beaumont Police.

Both of the workers were taken to a Beaumont hospital where Andrew Mendez Lopez, 27, of Houston died according to police.

A Texas Department of Transportation spokesperson confirmed that two of its contractors were struck.

At least three pickup trucks appeared to be involved in the wreck that happened along the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 69 at Tram Road.

The wreck forced the closure of all Southbound lanes at Cooks Lake Road.

On Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at 10:29 am, Beaumont Police responded  to the 11,000 block of Eastex Freeway (Hwy 69) southbound near Tram Road in reference to a multi vehicle crash.

The crash occurred in an active construction zone and vehicles struck two road construction workers. 

Both workers were transported to a local hospital, where one died from his injuries. 

The investigation is on-going. The deceased name is not being released at this time pending next of kin notification.
