Seahawks stay perfect with 87-49 win over North American University

PORT ARTHUR – Lamar State College Port Arthur created its own head start, taking a 15-0 lead against North American University, and never looked back as the Seahawks stayed undefeated with an 87-49 decision over the Stallions on Tuesday night at the Carl Parker Center.

The Seahawks, now 6-0, played hardcore defense in setting up a frustrating night of basketball for North American University. The Hawks forced the Stallions into quick shots that just wouldn’t fall while working their way out to a double-figure lead over the first seven minutes of the game. NAU’s first basket came at the 13:04 mark and by that time, the game was all but done.

The Seahawks weren’t finished, though, leading by as much as 18 in the first half and 41 down the second-half stretch.

“Our defense was really good in the first half. The points they did score were on offensive rebounds or in transition,” Seahawks head coach Lance Madison said. “We made some adjustments and came out in the second half and did a better job on the boards. We pressured them a little bit and sped them up. We did some good things and this was a great win for us tonight.”

Beaumont Ozen HS graduate John Comeaux led the Seahawks with 16 points and six assists, while Madit Daniel added 12 points and six rebounds, and Keion Farrington added 10 points.

Ryan Abel, a graduate of Port Neches-Groves HS, was the leading rebounder for the Hawks with seven boards, adding eight points.

“Ryan is a sneaky athlete,” Madison said. “He has very long arms, he’s a quick leaper and he’s learning to score within our offense. He does a great job of rebounding the basketball. His dad coaches high school basketball, so he has a good foundation. He’s a good fundamental basketball player.”

The Seahawks outshot the Stallions from the floor 50 percent to 22 percent, and the Hawks were nearly perfect from the free throw line, knocking down 11 of 12 in the game.

“The guys were focused and ready to play tonight. I could see that in the shoot-around before the game,” Madison said. “This is the best start we had all year.”

The Seahawks come back after Thanksgiving for their final non-conference game, a Saturday 4 p.m. tip at the Parker against Texas Southern University Club. LSCPA opens NJCAA Region 14 play with a home game against Tyler Junior College on Wednesday, November 30. That game tips off at 7 p.m.
