Red Beats White in Annual Hoops Scrimmage

BEAUMONT, Texas – For a second consecutive season, Lamar University associate basketball coach Bobby Kummer guided the Red team to a victory in the annual Red vs. White scrimmage Tuesday night. The Red team jumped out to a 12-point second-half lead and held on to record 43-37 victory over the White team.

The Cardinals held a 20-minute scrimmage in the Montagne Center which followed a three-point contest and dunk contest. The scrimmage also gave the basketball team an opportunity to show off the upgrades to the Montagne Center which includes a new center-hanging, four-panel LED video board, new sound system and new lights.

“We saw two teams get after each other tonight,” said LU head coach Tic Price. “We still have a long way to go. We have to work on our execution on the offensive end of the floor. Both teams were trapping trying to force the other out of their offensive flow – both teams were very successful at it.”

Trailing by three points at halftime, the Red squad opened the second half on a 15-0 run to take 12-point advantage, 32-20, with 5:34 remaining. The run was started by sophomore Josh Nzeakor who got fouled on a layup. Although he didn’t convert the three-point play, the Red got the ball back following a steal by junior college transfer Colton Weisbrod.

The Nederland native’s theft led to two free throws from senior Lincoln Davis giving the Red team its first lead of the half – it would be the final lead change of the game. Following another basket by Nzeakor to push the advantage to double digits, Weisbrod closed the run with a layup.

Although trailing by 12, the White team didn’t quit. LU assistant coach Brian Burton’s team responded with a 6-0 run of its own to cut the deficit in half. After Nzeakor went 1-of-2 from the free throw line to push the advantage back to nine points, 35-26, the White cut the deficit down to three with consecutive three-pointers from sophomore Nick Garth and junior Torey Noel.

“The White team had an opportunity to fold in the second half,” said Price. “I was proud of how they didn’t quit but kept scrapping. I think the team as a whole gave good effort.”

Despite the run, the White team could get no closer than three as the Red team pushed its lead back to six before the final buzzer. Nzeakor was one of two players to score 10 points on the night. He finished just a rebound shy of a double-double. The White team was led by Noel’s 10 points and four assists. Garth, and junior Joey Frenchwood each added eight points for their respective squads.

The Cardinals kick off the regular season Friday, Nov. 11 at home against Howard Payne. The game against the Yellow Jackets will tip off at 7 p.m. from the Montagne Center.
