Opening statements begin at 9 Tuesday morning in the trial of Stephen Odom.

Odom is on trial facing injury to a child charges in connection to the January 2012 death of 4-year-old Ja'kyra Henderson. Odom was the boyfriend of the little girl's mother.

Beaumont police say Ja'kyra was found unresponsive at the Calder Woods Retirement Center where her mother worked at the time.

Her autopsy revealed that her liver was compressed against her spine and was lacerated from blunt force trauma.

Ja'kyra's father hopes Odom gets the maximum penalty if convicted.

The trial is taking place in Judge John Stevens' courtroom.
