Amid heat indexes of 109, Nederland police officers began tackling the tedious task of moving into a freshly renovated station Wednesday.

The police department has called 1400 Boston Avenue home since 1977, but everyone packed up and moved down the street 13 months ago so construction crews could remodel the station.

Chief Darrell Bush says the project completely gutted the building but now there's enough room for everyone. Several technological upgrades include energy efficient lights and air conditioning.

"They have strengthened the building, fortified the building to withstand 150 mph hurricane winds. The technology, of course (in) 1977 not really technology like there is today so everything is up to today's standards... we planned for the future," said Bush.

The court room sits near the front doors of the building and will also serve as an emergency operations center in the event of a disaster.

The Nederland Fire Department will move into the other half of the building once construction is complete.
