A long-time prosecutor with the Jefferson County District Attorney's office has announced his retirement.

Perry Thomas' last day will be July 31.

Thomas has been an assistant district attorney for 24 years.

"It has been an honor and privilege to have served the citizens of Jefferson County for the past two decades. My career has been dedicated to fighting for victims of crime," said Thomas in a news release issued Monday.

While serving as assistant district attorney, Thomas has prosecuted multiple death penalty cases, the largest theft/embezzlement case in the history of Jefferson County and thousands of other misdemeanor and felony cases.

Thomas made clear his reason for retiring.

"At this time I am retiring from my role as Assistant District Attorney so that I can focus on my campaign for District Attorney," said Thomas.
