Skimmer scams are back

Beaumont Police are sharing ways to help you not become a victim of this scam.

There has been another case of skimmers at the gas pumps in Beaumont.

"Skimming" involves electronically stealing your financial information as you use your card to buy gas.

The Exxon gas station on the corner of Eastex Freeway and 105 is the first to report a skimmer device. The store manager found the device during a routine check of the pumps.

Beaumont Police are sharing ways to help you not become a victim of this scam.

First, check the tape seals at the pump to see if they are broken. If that is the case, report it to police or let the store manager know.

Also, pay attention to your surroundings. If you notice someone is not getting gas and has their car door wide open, blocking the pump and view from the outside store cameras, notify the manager or clerks inside.

Your Bluetooth could help you spot a skimmer, too. If you notice a connection on your device that is just a bunch of numbers or letters, that could possibly be someone trying to steal your information.

The best way to avoid becoming a victim is to pay for your gas with cash, but that is not always possible. If you can't, then pay with a credit card, or a gas card, and never use your pin number.

To report this to police, you can call dispatch at 911. Or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 833-TIPS (8477).
