A robbery suspect was sent to the hospital with severe head injuries following a scuffle with the victim Friday morning.

According to Lt. Scott Gaspard of the Port Arthur Police Department, the robbery happened shortly after midnight in the 1200 block of Gulfway Drive at a CITGO station.

A news release says officers were called to a fight and assault in progress. When officers arrived they found an injured man in the parking lot. Police determined that the injured man was the suspect. Witnesses said the robbery victim defended himself and his property when the suspect tried to steal a bicycle.

The suspect, a man, 39, of Port Arthur, was taken to CHRISTUS Southeast Texas St. Mary with head injuries. The news release says the suspect was reported to be in stable but guarded condition.
