There can only be one.

Thursday morning spellers from across Jefferson and Liberty counties gathered at the BISD administration building to prove their mettle.

In the end, Sallie Curtis Elementary 5th grader Ben Chen took the top spot at the Zone 4 spelling bee. Chen won by correctly spelling bhalu. He narrowly edged out Kevin Tran of Fletcher Elementary after 21 rounds.

Chen will head to Houston to compete in the Houston Public Media Spelling Bee on Saturday, April 7, 2018. If he wins there, he’ll go on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, May 2018, in the Washington, DC area.

According to the organizer's web page, the national spelling bee was founded in 1925 and has been held continuously since, except during the World War II years of 1943, 1944 and 1945. Scripps-Howard Newspapers took ownership of the program in 1941.
