A Nederland man will now have to rebuild after a fire destroyed both his home and his livelihood.

Firefighters were called to the 200 block of S. 17th St. around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

According to the homeowner, he was sleeping when the fire started and he struggled to get out because he could not see through the smoke.

He did make it out safely and emergency crews made sure he was ok.

The man tells 12News he was laid off from his job about three years ago and started a lawn service to make ends meet. But now everything is lost because the fire destroyed his home, all of his lawn service equipment and his two pickup trucks.

He believes the fire started on his patio, but fire officials have not confirmed that information.
