A mother and child escaped from a house fire without injury Tuesday afternoon in Groves

The mother and child were the only two of four residents home at the time of the fire in the 5500 block of Sonnier in Groves.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined but it apparently started outside according to firefighters on the scene.

The woman who escaped told 12News that when she awoke she smelled smoke so she got out of the home with her child.

She believes the fire may have started around a hot tub behind the home.

Most of the damage to the home is tat he back of the house along with some in the attic and smoke damage throughout the home which is structurally not a complete loss according to Groves Fire Department Chief Jackson.

Firefighters from Port Neches, Nederland and Groves responded to the fire.
