Mayor addresses the next step after councilwoman passes away

Beaumont city council members remembered Gethrel Williams-Wright during the first meeting since the mayor pro tem passed away.

Beaumont city council members remembered Gethrel “Get” Williams-Wright during the first meeting since the Mayor Pro Tem passed away.

Williams-Wright’s picture and flowers were placed where she used to sit for over 10 years.

"Thank you God for Get Williams-Wright's leadership we thank you, for she was a servant leader,” said Pastor Rodney Graves who led the group in prayer at the meeting. "You will be missed because your seat will be empty, we miss you already."

Mayor Becky Ames said it’s too premature to think about her replacement but explains there is a process takes place before someone is appointed.

She explains in the past the council has agreed to appoint someone as a fill in who will serve for the rest of the term. However, the person who is appointed is asked not to run for office once their term is up.

"I’ve always preferred that because then they are just to fill the term then the elections opens up and the people get to decide,” said Mayor Ames.

Mayor Ames said the details have not been discussed yet during a meeting but she wants to emphasize that she will wait until after the funeral to discuss the future of the city council.

“She was not only my colleague she was my friend,” said Mayor Ames.

'"Council member Wright has really big shoes to fill, it's an important decision the council will have to make because the person who succeeds her will represent the city as a whole so looking for someone well rounded that's really involved in the community and could be cohesive with the council."

Mayor Becky Ames said the council will appoint someone within the group as the Mayor Pro Tem after a few weeks.
