The Sulphur Police are investigating the death of a man in one of their holding cells early Thursday morning.

According to Chief Lewis Coats, on Monday, July 17, 2017, at approximately 10:15 p.m., the Sulphur Police Department received a call of an intoxicated person in Invader Street and Trailer Street.

An officer responded to the area and located a white male identified as Jacob Naegele alone and sitting on the ground.

It was determined that Mr. Naegele was intoxicated and he was subsequently arrested for disturbing the peace by public intoxication.

He was brought to the Sulphur City Jail where he was placed in a holding cell.

At approximately 2:45 a.m., a jailer, making a routine cell check, discovered Mr. Naegele deceased in his cell.

An investigation immediately began into the circumstances of his death revealing no evidence of foul play.

Mr. Naegele’s body was turned over the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office for examination.

An internal investigation is ongoing to determine all circumstances surrounding Mr. Naegele’s death.

Chief Lewis Coats and the Sulphur Police Department send their condolences to the Naegele family for their loss.
