Legitimate explosive device found in Beaumont Starbucks highlights preparedness concerns

"People are in [Starbucks] every day so it's scary," says Jean Olivier, who was grocery shopping just several hundred feet from the coffee shop.

BEAUMONT — An explosive device found at a Beaumont Starbucks begs the question, is Southeast Texas prepared for a bomb case similar to what we saw in Austin?

"People are in [Starbucks] every day so it's scary," says Jean Olivier, who was grocery shopping just several hundred feet from the coffee shop.

Law enforcement officials were alerted to a 'legitimate explosive device' early Thursday morning.

"That is a scary thought, so close to home something like that can be set up," Olivier says.

Bombs are a threat that affect and involve various city, state, and federal officials.

The XM1216 is one of the newest toys for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

"Before we send any operators, we send the robot in," Deputy Marcus Mclellan says.

The XM1216 is a small unmanned ground robotic vehicle capable of capturing audio and video up close.

"It gives us that added intel before we go into a situation," Deputy Mclellan says.

The device is operated by a remote control and can detect various objects inside a suspicious package through movements and cameras.

"It can tell us if there's any heat generated through a fuse or even batteries," he says.

If it's considered a threat, the ATF steps in with certified explosive specialists to handle the situation.

"We have a great relationship with entities," Mclellan says.

It's various law enforcement entities working together, all with the same goal in mind in keeping people safe.

"You would think that wouldn't be possible here in Beaumont," Olivier says.

Investigators now plan to examine the components of the device to try to determine who assembled it.
