Deputies in Jasper County are investigating Wednesday after human remains were found south of Jasper by a hunter.

A deer hunter removing his stand discovered the skeletal remains off of County Road 351 according to chief deputy Glenn Blank.

Deputies are unsure if the remains, which were found near the Erin community, are from a man a or a woman.

The skull has been sent off for forensic testing Blank told 12News.

Jasper County Sheriff Mitchell Newman tells 12News that there was a person from the area who went missing a few years ago but until they receive forensic results they won't be able to make any identification.

The Texas Rangers are assisting in the investigation.
