An emotional yet inspirational day for a group from Lamar University attending the public viewing for former first lady Barbara Bush.

Thousands of people pay their respects on Friday at the St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Houston.

Several people 12News spoke to say this moment will go down in history books, and for the group from Lamar, it's something they will never forget.

"I think she really fulfilled her life mission to help others," says Maegan Collins, Graduate Student at Lamar University.

"When we went to the church everything went silent," She says.

"You were able to feel the presence of the first lady," Collins explains.

Collins along with Mikala DeVillier and Political Science Professor Sara Gubala were present in what they called history being made.

"I knew from the moment we got here and saw the big crowds of people lined up, this was going to be something I will never forget," Gubala says.

The group remembers the former first lady's impact during her lifetime, and the legacy she leaves behind.

"I'm going to remember her as a family woman who pushed for literacy and so many great things," Gubala says.

"Take some time this weekend and do something with your family to honor and remember her legacy," DeVillier explains.

The group says this is an unforgettable experience they will never forget.
