Construction around the Parkdale Mall, affecting Eastex Freeway and Dowlen Road won't be finished until 2017.
It has been a headache for drivers like Sharayah Courtney, who drives on major roads like Dowlen every day.
She says it makes driving from Point A to Point B difficult.
"It's irritating, it's very long and it makes the process much longer to get from one side of town to the other, especially with the school traffic in the mornings and the way they've messed up the on and exit ramps, it's terrible,” Courtney said.
Today, the Beaumont City Council approved a solution for the traffic along Dowlen Road.
The Northwest Parkway, running from major drive to the Parkdale Mall loop is expected to open in 2018.
However, construction will begin around the holidays, which is a major concern for other drivers like Joseph Thomas.
"Oh it's going to be real worse around Christmas, around the holidays it is going to be bad."
But he likes that an alternate route will be available in a few years’ time.
"Yeah it's going to be used a lot. I'll use it a lot, just to avoid a lot of this traffic."
Other drivers like Courtney are not yet convinced.
"We'll be stuck in even more construction and it's good they will have those jobs for people building the road but other than that it's just a headache," Courtney said.
The $12.1 million Northwest Parkway will be funded by the city’s airport oil and gas revenues.
MK Constructors, Inc., of Vidor, will lead the project.
