CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer was treated and released after he was injured by shattered glass from his patrol car during a violent protest in uptown Charlotte Wednesday night.
One person was shot near the Ritz-Carlton Hotel and city officials say the person is listed in critical condition on life support. Two others also suffered minor injuries. Officials say it was a civilian who shot another civilian during the protests.
The incident occurred just after 8:30 and prompted CMPD officers in riot gear to barricade the entrance to the hotel. Employees of BLT Steak inside the hotel barricaded the windows after hotel officials locked the front doors while paramedics tended to the shooting victim.
Witnesses told NBC Charlotte's Ty Chandler that a man was shot, but did not see the person who fired the shots.
The officer spoke to NBC Charlotte and said he was sitting in his patrol car and witnessed the man get shot. The officer said suddenly a brick shattered the windshield of his patrol car and glass got into his eye.
The officer said when he got out of his patrol car, he was hit by a protestor in the wrist by a wrench.
The officer was treated and released from the hospital. CMPD confirmed that four officers were injured during Wednesday night's protests, all experience injuries that were not life-threatening.
