A Beaumont middle school student has been recovering in a Houston hospital after he was beaten and robbed by a group of teens on his way home from school last week.

On Friday, September 30, Omar Cabrera, 13, was walking home from South Park Middle School when he was approached by four teens who beat him before stealing his wireless phone according to his mother, Virginia Martinez.

He suffered a broken jaw and cuts and bruises on his arms and chest.

Martinez tell 12News that it's painful to see her son suffering but also says she fears for his safety because her son's attack is eerily similar to the death of 11-year old Josue Flores-- who was stabbed to death over the summer while walking home in Houston.

"There was a Hispanic kid that was recently killed in Houston," Martinez said.

"When I got the news about my son, I felt so bad but blessed he was okay. I was praying for the mother who didn't have the same luck as me," she said.

Omar is expected to be released today from Memorial Herman Children's Hospital in Houston where he's had several surgeries to mend his broken jaw.s
