Beaumont ISD Police conduct active shooter drill at Ozen High School

The Beaumont Independent School District's Police Chief Joeseph Malbrough says that Thursday's drill went a little differently that traditional safety drills.

While all seemed quiet and peaceful outside of Ozen High School this morning, inside was a different story.

The Beaumont Independent School District Police ran the students through drills of what to do if they are ever in an active shooter situation.

BISD Police Chief Joeseph Malbrough says that Thursday's drill went a little differently than traditional safety drills.

"The reason why it was a success, I believe, was because we actually were able to conduct an intruder lockdown during mass movement of a campus," Chief Malbrough said.

He said their methods had to change so that they could understand how to get a large number of students into a secured area at one time.

Some parents said they appreciate the drills, especially in the wake of the school shooting in Florida.

Concerned parent Daniel Clark III said, "I think it will help, it wont hurt. It's positive and I don't see anything negative about it."

Other parents, like Susan Rawls, feel the focus should be in other areas.

"I understand that threats are everywhere and we do have to be prepared, we have to be aware. But make sure after we do these drills we also have counseling for the students that may have a problem with that drill," Rawls said.

This is part of an ongoing effort to help parents feel better about their children's safety at school.
