High water levels on Sabine River force delay of weekend fishing tournament in Orange

The Sabine River authority says that all 11 spillway gates at Toledo Bend are open four feet each to lower the reservoir level, causing higher water levels at the river.

ORANGE — High waters on the Sabine River have forced the delay of this weekend's bass fishing tournament in Orange.

The Bass Anglers Sportsman Society, or B.A.S.S., announced the delay of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Elite at Sabine River on Friday.

All 11 spillway gates at the Toledo Bend reservoir are open to four feet to lower the reservoir's level, causing higher water levels along the river according to the Sabine River Authority.

Fishing expert Cory Rambo, of Rambo Outdoors, says that higher water levels can affect the outcome of the tournament.

"Most of the time it muddy's the water up, making it a bit more difficult," said Rambo, "As far as the fish itself, it spreads them out."

Organizers are monitoring river levels and will make a decision Monday on when to start the event according to a statement on their website.
