A Jasper police officer has been arrested on a charge of sexually assaulting a child.
Billy Joe Murphy, 37, of Huntington, was arrested on a charge of sexually assaulting a child under 17 on Friday, November 10, 2017, according to a release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
KTRE in Lufkin reports that Murphy is currently a police officer for the City of Jasper and is a former Angelina County Sheriff's Deputy.
Troopers transported Murphy to the Angelina County Jail where he was released Saturday on a $75,000 bond.
The case is under investigation by the Texas Rangers.

LUFKIN, TX – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) arrested a Huntington man yesterday for allegedly sexually assaulting a child who was younger than 17 years old.
The preliminary information indicates Texas Rangers were notified of the sexual assault on Nov. 7 and began an investigation into the allegations.
As a result of the investigation, Billy Joe Murphy, 37, was arrested for the felony.
Murphy was transported to the Angelina County Jail by State Troopers.This is an ongoing investigation. No additional information is available at this time.
