After three freezing nights in woods man who fled Monday arrested following chase on Thursday

A man who fled from deputies earlier this week spent three freezing nights hiding out in the woods in a deer stand with a small propane heater that didn't last very long.

A man who fled on foot from deputies in Jefferson and Chambers County after leading them on a high-speed chase on Monday is now in custody after spending a few nights out in the cold.

Alex Espinoza, 30, of Amarillo, was arrested by deputies on Thursday driving a stolen pickup truck according to a release from the Jefferson County Sheriffs' Office.

The sheriff's office received a call Thursday just after 12:30 p.m. from a man who said he was following his brother's stolen truck east on U.S. Highway 90 the release said.

When deputies spotted the truck and attempted to stop it Espinoza fled again but became stuck in the mud when the truck veered off the road into a field in the 2100 block of North Broadway in China according to the release.

He then jumped from the truck and fled but deputies arrested him nearby after a much shorter search than on Monday.

He has been charged with evading detention in a motor vehicle and could face more charges according to the release.

Espinoza fled from deputies Monday while driving a stolen Dodge Charger ad fled with a passenger on foot after wrecking the car in Chambers County according to the release.

Following an extensive search for the duo, his passenger, Robert DeYoung, 34, of WInnie was arrested the release said.

He spent three nights hiding out in the woods as temperatures dropped well below freezing.

Espinoza was able to find a deer stand with a small propane heater that didn't last very long, according to deputies.

He had eaten or had anything to drink since Monday according to the release.

Espinoza has pending charges in Hardin County, Lubbock County, Swisher County, Briscoe County and Chambers County the release said.
