A man Beaumont police say committed the first homicide of 2013 has been indicted.

A Jefferson County Grand Jury Thursday handed up a one-count indictment against Lance Jaccoby Moore, 26, of Beaumont, charging him with murder. Investigators say Moore shot and killed his cousin Lorenzo Simon, 41, of Beaumont.

On February 27, patrol officers were called to a shooting in the 10000 block of Dusty Lane in north Beaumont. When officers arrived they found Simon laying in a ditch suffering from a gunshot wound to his lower body. He was taken to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth by Beaumont EMS, but doctors could not save his life.

Officers talked with Moore at the scene, then took him into custody. A news release issued by the Beaumont Police Department the day of Moore's arrest says he admitted to shooting Simon with a rifle.

According to statements given to police by witnesses, Moore and Simon were involved in some type of disturbance. During the disturbance, Moore shot Simon one time.
