Preliminary figures released by the Beaumont Independent School District show the embattled district has lost 500 students over the same time last year. According to figures released Friday, 18,393 students were enrolled, compared to 18,897 in the 2013-14 school year.

In a statement released by the district, officials say the figures are preliminary and "...should not be used to make enrollment, or staffing assumptions. The official enrollment snapshot date per state guidelines is October 31, 2014."

"Once enrollment data has been validated, the district will assess staffing overages and shortfalls," the district said in a release.

Beaumont ISD's Board of Trustees and superintendent were removed by the Texas Education Agency over the summer months after officials grew concerned over the district's handling of finances.
