UPDATE: Capital murder suspect carries extensive criminal background

Posted: Updated:

Beaumont police are still looking for a 31-year-old man who is accused of fatally shooting a 16-year-old girl and her mother.

A Jefferson County judge has issued a capital murder warrant for Joseph Colone, Jr. According to a press release, Colone is considered armed and dangerous.  His bond is set at $2,000,000.

Police say Colone shot and killed 43-year-old Mary Goodman-Hernandez and her daughter 16-year-old Briana Goodman around 7:40 Saturday morning; the shooting took place at Goodman's duplex in the 4600 block of Hartel Street.

At the time of the shooting, family members say Robert Fontenot, who was Goodman's girlfriend, went face-to-face with Colone but managed to get away unharmed.

"He is in shock," said Jamesetta Fontenot, who claims Robert is her uncle. 'He is just in complete shock."

When police arrived on scene, they found the 16-year-old girl shot to death in the backyard; her mother was found in the front doorway.

One neighbor who didn't want to be identified told 12 News HD about what he heard Saturday morning.

"We woke up and heard at least three gunshots," said the neighbor as he stood behind crime tape.  "I looked out the window and saw a masked man running toward the backyard. That's when I decided it was time to hit the floor."

The masked man is believed to be Colone who carries a criminal background.

Last Thursday, a Jefferson County Grand Jury indicted the 31-year-old on two counts of aggravated robbery.

Police say on June 24, Colone stormed into the C & S Arcade, which is located in the 4300 block of Fourth Street, struck one employee with a pistol and demanded cash..

Before leaving with the cash, investigators say Colone made two store employees take off their clothes.

Police say that he had just bonded out of jail.

Following the shooting, Lamar University's campus was put on lockdown for three hours as police searched for Colone.

By Saturday evening, the search had moved to the Woodlands apartment complex located in the 3100 block of West Cardinal Drive.  Family members say that is where Calone's girlfriend lives.

The motive is still unclear, but family members say that Colone and Goodman knew each other.
