Beaumont native says the city 'stinks'

The creator of the award-winning short film "Beaumont Stinks" says she picked the title because she knew it would be an attention grabber.

"I knew it would get people talking," said 54-year-old Ann Huey by phone Friday. "I love Beaumont and this my way of showing my appreciation."

Last week in Austin, Huey found out that she had won Texas Monthly's short film contest;she went up against nine other people.

Huey says she sorted through 700 pictures, wrote a script and edited the piece in exactly a month.

Throughout the film, the Beaumont native used pictures to illustrate Beaumont's history and unique culture. in She also takes a "tongue-in-cheek" approach to the project as she describes the Cajun influence and all our popular dishes here in Southeast Texas...

"I kind of had a renewed appreciation of the city," she added. "There's so many beautiful buildings in Beaumont, and there's a lot of interesting people."It was kind of fun to come back and rediscover it."

The film is also creating a buzz among city officials.

"I think it's genius," said Stephanie Molina, who is director of marketing for Beaumont Convention and Visitor's Bureau. "we could definitely use some of her concepts for our marketing."
