The City of Beaumont could one day have a stretch of roadway named after a longtime baseball coach. City council members next week will hold a workshop to discuss changing the name of Florida Avenue between University and MLK Parkway in honor of Lamar University Baseball Coach Jim Gilligan.
Councilman W.L. Pate tells 12 News several weeks ago a number of citizens approached him asking how to request such a change. Councilman Pate says he spoke with University President Jimmy Simmons about the idea and Simmons agreed that the effort would be an excellent way to recognize Gilligan for the work he has done to promote Lamar and its baseball team.
"As someone who has considered Jim Gilligan a good friend since we were both students at Lamar in the 60s, I am proud of the things he has done to elevate the baseball program to the point of national recognition," said Pate.
"I am happy he has so many supporters that want to recognize him for what he ahs done for the university and the community"
City council will discuss the possible name change at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
