At 3 La. med schools, 437 grads learn residencies

Associated Press - March 18, 2010 6:04 PM ET

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Louisiana State University's medical schools in Shreveport and New Orleans say 59 percent of their graduates are staying in Louisiana for their residencies. The figure was 50 percent at each school a year ago.

Dr. Robert Barish, chancellor of LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, says the figure is important because doctors are likely to stay in the state where they complete their training.

At Tulane University Medical School, about 31 percent of the graduates are staying in Louisiana for their residencies. Spokesman Arthur Nead says that's about the same as the percentage of students from Louisiana.

Shreveport's medical school had 108 graduates, the LSU medical school in New Orleans 165, and Tulane's medical school 164.
